Great news for U.S. citizens living in Canada. As we expected, the U.S. Ambassador to Canada has announced that the U.S. government will be waiving penalties for U.S. citizens living in Canada who file their U.S. information returns and income tax returns properly and owe no tax to the U.S. government. For those who have applied under the U.S. Voluntary Disclosure program, you can relax – the 5% penalty will not be applied to your accounts, and the I.R.S. will refund that money to you if you have already repaid it. For those who did not to apply under the U.S. Volluntary Disclosure Initiative ("VDI"), you have a limited time to come into compliance with U.S. tax laws. We strongly recommend that you CONTACT US to prepare your income tax returns and disclosures immediately. Failure to comply with U.S. tax rules could result in problems crossing the international borders between the U.S. and Canada, and the U.S. penalties can be very costly.  Canada Revenue Agency will even assist in the collection of the IRS penalties.  YOU NEED TO ACT IMMEDIATELY!
